War, discrimination, fear, and … slapstick? In 1940’s Tomainia, the country is run with an iron fist by the ruthless dictator Adenoid Hynkel (Charlie Chaplin), intent on eradicating all threats to his power, with the Jewish population as his newest target.

But little does Hynkel know there is a Jew in the ghetto who looks uncannily similar to him, resisting persecution while cutting hair with style right under his nose. Will the humble barber (Charles Chaplin) be able to survive the wrath of Hynkel and his stormtroopers while falling in love with fellow ghetto inhabitant Hannah (Paulette Goddard), or will tyranny prevail as the dictator engages in absurd power struggles with Benzino Napaloni, the dictator of neighboring country Bacteria, and sets his sights even higher towards world domination?

The Great Dictator, written and directed by Chaplin, is widely considered one of his top films ever produced and his first-ever film with sound.
